National Guard Epoxy Floor Systems: Coating, Solvent-Free and Screed

Glossy epoxy floor surface in an industrial building

Warehouse, workshop and car park floors need more than wall paint. Short answer: National Paints’ specifier gives three National Guard floor systems: a two-coat epoxy floor coating over a cement primer, a solvent-free epoxy system, and a heavy-duty epoxy screed of 2 to 10 mm. Each one is listed below coat by coat.

The three systems

Solvent-free epoxyNational Guard Primer for Cement (1); National Guard Epoxy Flooring S.F. (1); National Guard Epoxy Flooring S.F., colour (1 to 2)
Heavy-duty epoxy screed, 2 to 10 mmNational Guard Epoxy Flooring S.F. as primer (1); National Guard Epoxy Flooring S.F. with screed (1 to 2); National Guard Epoxy Flooring S.F. as topcoat, or S.F. colour (1)

Choosing between them

  • Simplest build-up: the epoxy coating is a primer plus two topcoats.
  • Solvent-free: the S.F. system uses National Guard Epoxy Flooring S.F. for the body and colour coats.
  • Heavy duty: the screed system builds 2 to 10 mm and is the one National labels heavy duty.

Frequently asked questions

How much epoxy do I need?

The specifier does not give coverage for floor products. Send us the floor area and the system you want, and we will work it out from the product data sheets.

Does the floor need preparing?

Yes. Every system starts with a primer on clean, sound concrete. Ask for the data sheet’s surface preparation section before you start.

Step 1: prepare the concrete

Preparation decides how well an epoxy floor bonds. National’s surface preparation guide sets these steps for concrete:

  1. Make the concrete clean, dry and sound.
  2. Remove laitance and efflorescence.
  3. Acid-etch or mechanically roughen smooth, power-floated slabs so the primer can key.
  4. Remove oil and grease.

How thick is an epoxy floor?

National’s specifier gives the epoxy coating system a total of about 300 to 350 microns. That is roughly two to three times the film of a steel enamel system. A heavy-duty screed is far thicker, at 2 to 10 mm.

Which system?

  • Epoxy coating: for a sealed, coloured floor at coating thickness.
  • Solvent-free epoxy: a solvent-free build in 1 to 2 colour coats.
  • Heavy-duty screed: 2 to 10 mm for heavy traffic. Ask us for the data sheet before specifying it.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Coating damp concrete. The preparation guide asks for a dry surface.
  • Skipping the primer coat listed in each system.
  • Mixing more two-pack material than you can apply in its pot life. Check each data sheet.

For walls rather than floors, National’s two-pack Polyurethane Topcoat system also starts with Guard Primer for Cement.
