National Wood Primer: Alkyd Primer for Softwood, Hardwood, Plywood and Chipboard

Wooden door

Short answer: National Wood Primer is a high-opacity, alkyd-based primer for softwood, hardwood, plywood and chipboard, inside and out. It dries to a white matt film, covers about 14 to 18 m² per litre and recoats in 8 hours at 30°C. It is the first coat of National’s painted wood system: Wood Primer, Stucco Filler, Synthetic Undercoat, then Gloss I or Gloss II enamel.

Step 1: prepare the wood

National’s surface preparation guide sets out the order for new wood:

  1. Make sure the wood is dry.
  2. Rub down with glass paper and dust off.
  3. Treat knots with knotting, and apply wood preservative where needed.
  4. Prime.

What the numbers mean

Coverage = volume solids × 10 ÷ dry film. At 30 microns: 550 ÷ 30 ≈ 18 m² per litre; at 40 microns: 550 ÷ 40 ≈ 14. That is the sheet’s range. Raw end grain and open-grained timber drink more, so expect the lower figure on new joinery.

How much to buy

AreaWood Primer, 1 coat
20 m² (about four door leaves, both sides)about 1.1 to 1.4 L
50 m²about 2.8 to 3.6 L
100 m²about 5.6 to 7.1 L
Our own calculations from the theoretical rate.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Priming damp wood. The preparation guide starts with dry timber.
  • Skipping knotting. Untreated knots can show through the finish.
  • Using the wrong thinner. The sheet lists National G.P. Thinner.
  • Recoating early. Wait the full 8 hours at 30°C.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stain or varnish over it?

No. It is a white, opaque primer for painted finishes. For a natural wood look, use Wood Stain or Synthetic Varnish. See all wood finishing systems.

Does it work on MDF or plywood?

The data sheet lists softwood, hardwood, plywood and chipboard. MDF is not named; ask us before using it on MDF.
