Short answer: National N.C. Sanding Sealer is a fast-drying, clear matt sealer based on alkyd and nitrocellulose. It levels and fills wood where the grain should stay visible. It is touch dry in 10 to 15 minutes, recoats in 3 to 4 hours at 30°C and covers about 10 m² per litre. National’s system is two coats of sealer, sanded, then two coats of N.C. Auto Lacquer Clear.

Step 1: prepare the wood
- Make sure the wood is dry, as National’s surface preparation guide requires.
- Rub down with glass paper along the grain and remove all dust.
Step 2: the system
- N.C. Sanding Sealer, two coats, sanding between coats.
- Optional on open-grain hardwood or MDF: N.C. Wood Filler, one coat.
- N.C. Auto Lacquer Clear, two coats.
What the numbers mean
Coverage = 30 × 10 ÷ 30 = 10 m² per litre. Only 30% of the wet film stays as solid, so a 100 micron wet coat leaves 30 microns. That thin film is what makes it quick to dry and easy to sand.

Mistakes to avoid
- Skipping the sand between coats. The system calls for it.
- Using G.P. Thinner. Use National Lacquer Thinner.
- Spraying in a closed room. With a 7°C flash point, ventilate and keep ignition sources away.
