National Stucco Filler: Getting Interior Walls Smooth Before Paint

Worker applying putty to a wall with a spatula

Paint shows every dent and ridge underneath it, which is why National Paints puts two coats of filler in its interior wall system. Short answer: National Stucco Filler is a ready-to-use, water-based PVA copolymer putty for interior concrete, plaster, masonry and wood. Apply it with a putty knife, about 100 microns per coat, and allow 6 to 8 hours between coats. This guide follows National Paints’ technical data sheet.

Where it fits in the system

  1. One coat of National PVA Primer Sealer for Masonry or PVA Primer White. National Acrylic Primer (W.B.) is another option in the specifier.
  2. Two coats of Stucco Filler.
  3. Two coats of emulsion, such as Eggshell Emulsion (Matt).

National also lists Stucco Filler under enamel systems for walls and for wooden doors and frames. See the interior wall system and our guide to painting an interior wooden door.

Applying it

  1. Make sure the primer is dry and the surface is clean.
  2. Spread a thin, even coat with a putty knife, working across the wall.
  3. Wait 6 to 8 hours at 30°C, then apply the second coat.
  4. Once dry, sand lightly and dust off before painting. The data sheet does not specify sanding, so follow your painter’s practice and the project specification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it outside?

National lists it for interior surfaces. For exterior filling, see our guide to filling exterior wall cracks.

Does it need thinning?

No. The data sheet lists it as ready for use. Clean tools with water.

From National’s data sheets.

Step 1: prepare the wall

  • Clean, dry and sound, per National’s surface preparation guide. Remove laitance, efflorescence and loose material.
  • Prime first. National’s interior system puts a primer such as Acrylic Primer (W.B.) or PVA Primer Sealer under the filler.
  • Fill deep cracks with Joint Filler before skimming.

What the numbers mean

Coverage = 60 × 10 ÷ 100 = 6 m² per litre. Wet film = 100 ÷ 0.60 ≈ 167 microns, matching the sheet’s 165. Skims are rarely even, so real use is often higher on rough walls.

Bedroom walls, about 45 m²about 15 L
Two-bed flat, about 200 m²about 67 L

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using it outside. The sheet lists interior use.
  • Second coat too soon. Wait 6 to 8 hours at 30°C.
  • Painting unsanded filler. Sand and dust off before the emulsion.
