Bare plaster and concrete soak up paint unevenly unless they are primed first. Short answer: National PVA Primer White for Masonry is a water-based, penetrating PVA-acrylic primer with antifungal and antibacterial additives, according to National. One coat covers about 10 to 11.5 m² per litre, and it can be recoated after 2 to 3 hours. National lists it as the primer under its Acrylic Rock, National Tile and Eco systems.

Frequently asked questions
PVA Primer White or Acrylic Primer?
Both are water-based and both appear on the Nationalthane system sheet as primer options. National describes PVA Primer White as especially formulated for texture spray systems. For interior emulsion walls, see our Acrylic Primer guide and the interior wall system.
What do I thin it with?
Clean water, 10 to 15%. See which National thinner to use.

Step 1: prepare the wall
- National’s surface preparation guide asks for a clean, dry, sound surface. Exteriors are washed with high-pressure water (2200 psi minimum) and left to dry.
- Remove laitance and efflorescence. New concrete can reach pH 13, so the primer goes on before any topcoat.
- Fill cracks with Joint Filler and open block with Block Filler.
What the numbers mean
Coverage = volume solids × 10 ÷ dry film: 35 × 10 ÷ 30 ≈ 11.7 and 35 × 10 ÷ 35 = 10 m² per litre, matching the sheet. Wet film = 30 ÷ 0.35 ≈ 86 microns, matching its 85 to 100.
Mistakes to avoid
- Priming damp or dusty walls.
- Over-thinning. Keep to 10 to 15% water.
- Spraying texture before the primer has dried 2 to 3 hours at 30°C.
Which other products list it?
Besides Acrylic Rock and Nutex, National names it under Marbert and Gloss Emulsion, and as an option under Plastic and Nice emulsions.
