National Nice Emulsion: Washable Matt Paint for Interior and Exterior Walls

Person painting a pale wall with a roller

Short answer: National Nice Emulsion is a water-based vinyl-acrylic emulsion with a matt finish and good washability, for interior and exterior walls. Prime with PVA Primer Sealer or PVA Primer White, apply two coats of Stucco Filler indoors, then two coats of Nice. It covers about 8 to 10 m² per litre, recoats in 2 to 4 hours at 30°C and thins 5 to 10% with water.

Why choose Nice

Nice is one of the National matt emulsions rated for both inside and outside, and its data sheet specifically notes good washability, useful for corridors, children’s rooms and stair walls that get touched and wiped. How it lines up against its neighbours:

Step 1: prepare the wall

  • Clean, dry and sound. Pressure-wash exteriors (National’s guide gives 2200 psi minimum); brush interiors free of dust.
  • Remove laitance and efflorescence; degrease with detergent where needed.
  • New concrete is highly alkaline (up to pH 13), so start with an alkali-resistant masonry primer.
  • On repainting, wash grease off kitchen and corridor walls and sand any gloss to dull it. This is general repaint practice.

Step 2: the system

  1. PVA Primer Sealer or PVA Primer White, one coat.
  2. Stucco Filler, two coats, interior only.
  3. Nice Emulsion, two coats.

What the numbers mean

Coverage = 400 ÷ 40 = 10 and 400 ÷ 50 = 8 m² per litre. Wet film for a 45-micron coat ≈ 113 microns (45 ÷ 0.40). With slightly lower solids than Matt and Super Matt, Nice needs a slightly thicker wet coat for the same dry film.

Frequently asked questions

How washable is it?

National’s data sheet describes “good washability” but gives no test rating. Let it cure fully before scrubbing.

Nice or Super Matt?

Both are matt, inside and out. Super Matt is acrylic and uses Acrylic Primer; Nice is vinyl-acrylic and uses PVA primer. Compare all in National emulsions compared.
