Nutex is the texture coat in several of National’s best-known wall systems. Short answer: National Nutex is a water-based copolymer emulsion with fine quartz aggregate, sprayed or rolled in one coat for a light, medium or heavy texture. It covers about 1.3 to 2.6 m² per litre and needs at least 24 hours before topcoating, according to National’s data sheet.
Key facts

| Drying at 30°C | Touch dry 4 to 6 hours; recoat or topcoat after 24 hours |
| Application | Special spray gun (nozzle 0.197 to 0.315 in, 60 to 70 psi) or roller |
| Thinning | Ready for use; clean with water |
| Shelf life | 18 months, sealed |
The system
- Primer, one coat: PVA Primer White for Masonry or National Tex Primer.
- Nutex, one coat.
- Topcoat, two coats after 24 hours: Nationalthane, National Polyurethane, Acrylic Rock Top Coat or National Weather Resist.
How much to buy
| Wall area | Nutex, one coat |
|---|---|
| 10 m² | about 3.8 to 7.7 L |
| 50 m² | about 19 to 38 L |
| 100 m² | about 38 to 77 L |
Frequently asked questions
Nutex or Texo Compound?
Both are National intermediate textures for the same systems. See our Texo Compound guide for how the data sheets differ.
Can I leave Nutex without a topcoat?
National describes it as an intermediate coat and its system ends with two topcoats. For a texture used as the final coat, see the National Tex range.
Nutex or Texo Compound?
| Nutex | Texo Compound | |
|---|---|---|
| Volume solids | 65% | 45% |
| Dry film per coat | 250 to 500 µm | 250 to 500 µm |
| m² per litre | 1.3 to 2.6 | 1 to 2 |
| Colours | White, off-white | Off-white |
| Application | Spray gun or roller | Spray gun |
| Topcoat after | 24 hours | 24 hours |
Step 1: prepare the wall
- National’s surface preparation guide calls for high-pressure water washing (2200 psi minimum) on exteriors, then a dry, sound surface free of laitance and efflorescence.
- Prime with PVA Primer White or Acrylic Primer (W.B.), as the system lists.
What the numbers mean
Coverage = 65 × 10 ÷ 250 = 2.6 and 65 × 10 ÷ 500 = 1.3 m² per litre, exactly the sheet’s range. A heavy texture uses twice the material of a light one.
| Wall area, 1 coat | Light (2.6 m²/L) | Heavy (1.3 m²/L) |
|---|---|---|
| 150 m² (boundary wall, both faces) | about 58 L | about 115 L |
| 400 m² (villa exterior) | about 154 L | about 308 L |
Mistakes to avoid
- Topcoating before 24 hours.
- Thinning it. It is ready for use.
- Changing nozzle or pressure mid-wall. Keep to the sheet’s 60 to 70 psi and one nozzle size per elevation.
