Short answer: National Super Matt Emulsion is a water-based acrylic emulsion with a smooth matt finish for interior and exterior concrete, plaster, masonry, brickwork, gypsum and wood. National’s system is one coat of Acrylic Primer (W.B.), one coat of Stucco Filler indoors, then two coats of Super Matt. It covers about 8.5 to 10.5 m² per litre, recoats in 2 to 4 hours at 30°C and thins 5 to 10% with water.
Super Matt or Matt Emulsion?
On paper the two share solids (42%), coverage and drying. The differences are the resin and the system around them:
| Super Matt | Matt Emulsion | |
|---|---|---|
| Resin | Acrylic | PVA/acrylic copolymer |
| Primer | Acrylic Primer (W.B.) × 1 | PVA Primer Sealer or White × 1 |
| Stucco Filler (interior) | 1 coat | 2 coats |
| Film per coat | 40 to 50 µm dry (95 to 120 wet) | 40 to 50 µm dry (95 to 120 wet) |
| Coverage | 8.5 to 10.5 m² per litre | 8.5 to 10.5 m² per litre |
Key facts
| Type | Water-based acrylic emulsion |
| Surfaces | Concrete, plaster, masonry, brickwork, gypsum, wood; interior and exterior |
| Finish and colours | Smooth matt; National shade card |
| Volume solids | 42 ± 2% |
| Spreading rate | 8.5 to 10.5 m² per litre (theoretical) |
| Film per coat | 40 to 50 microns dry (95 to 120 wet) |
| Drying at 30°C | Touch dry 1 hour; recoat 2 to 4 hours |
| Application | Brush, roller or spray |
| Thinning | 5 to 10% with water |
| Shelf life | 18 months, sealed |
Step 1: prepare the wall
- Make the surface clean, dry and sound. Outside, National’s guide gives high-pressure washing at 2200 psi or more; inside, brush off dust and loose material.
- Remove laitance on new concrete and any efflorescence, both of which the guide says weaken adhesion.
- Repair cracks with Joint Filler; seal open blocks with Block Filler.
Step 2: the system
- Acrylic Primer (W.B.), one coat. It is National’s alkali-resistant primer for interior and exterior concrete and plaster.
- Stucco Filler, one coat, interior only.
- Super Matt Emulsion, two coats, 2 to 4 hours apart at 30°C.
What the numbers mean
Coverage = 420 ÷ 40 = 10.5 and 420 ÷ 50 = 8.4 m² per litre. Wet film for a 45-micron coat ≈ 107 microns (45 ÷ 0.42), in the middle of the sheet’s 95 to 120 range.
How much to buy
| Job | Wall area | Super Matt, 2 coats | Acrylic Primer, 1 coat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedroom 4 × 4 m, 3 m high | about 45 m² | 8.6 to 10.6 L | 3.8 to 4.5 L |
| Two-bedroom flat | about 200 m² | 38 to 47 L | 17 to 20 L |
| Villa exterior | about 400 m² | 76 to 94 L | 33 to 40 L |
Mistakes to avoid
- Swapping in a PVA primer. National’s Super Matt system specifies Acrylic Primer (W.B.).
- Thinning more than 10%. The sheet allows 5 to 10%.
- Using Stucco Filler on exterior walls. It is interior only.
Frequently asked questions
Super Matt or Nice Emulsion?
Both are matt and go inside or out. Nice is vinyl-acrylic with National’s “good washability” note and slightly lower coverage (8 to 10 m² per litre). See National emulsions compared.
Can I spray it?
Yes, the sheet lists brush, roller or spray.
