Short answer: National Acryl Emulsion II is a water-based acrylic copolymer emulsion with what National calls a smooth, superior matt finish, for interior and exterior concrete, plaster, masonry, blockwork, gypsum and wood. It is alkali resistant and contains antifungal and antibacterial additives. Prime with PVA Primer Sealer or PVA Primer White, use two coats of Stucco Filler indoors, then two coats of Acryl II. It covers about 8.5 to 10.5 m² per litre and recoats in 2 to 4 hours at 30°C.
How it compares with National’s other exterior matts
| Acryl II | Super Matt | Matt | Nice | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resin | Acrylic | Acrylic | PVA/acrylic | Vinyl-acrylic |
| Volume solids | 42% | 42% | 42% | 40% |
| m² per litre | 8.5 to 10.5 | 8.5 to 10.5 | 8.5 to 10.5 | 8 to 10 |
| Primer | PVA Sealer or White | Acrylic Primer (W.B.) | PVA Sealer or White | PVA Sealer or White |
| Thinning | 10 to 15% | 5 to 10% | 5 to 10% | 5 to 10% |
Key facts
| Type | Water-based acrylic copolymer emulsion |
| Where | Interior and exterior |
| Finish and colours | Smooth matt; National shade card |
| Volume solids | 42 ± 2% |
| Specific gravity | 1.50 ± 0.05 |
| Spreading rate | 8.5 to 10.5 m² per litre (theoretical) |
| Film per coat | 40 to 50 microns dry (95 to 120 wet) |
| Drying at 30°C | Touch dry 1 hour; recoat 2 to 4 hours |
| Application | Brush, roller or spray (airless 2000 to 2500 psi, tip 0.018 to 0.021 inch; air 40 to 50 psi) |
| Thinning | 10 to 15% with water |
| Shelf life | 18 months at 30°C, sealed |
Step 1: prepare the wall
- Exterior: pressure-wash at 2200 psi or more, as National’s guide sets out, to remove dust, salts and loose material; let the wall dry.
- New concrete and plaster: remove laitance and efflorescence. Fresh concrete can reach pH 13, and the guide says coatings must be alkali resistant, which Acryl II’s data sheet says it is.
- Repairs: fill cracks with Joint Filler; seal porous blocks with Block Filler.
Step 2: the system
| Coat | Interior | Exterior |
|---|---|---|
| Primer | PVA Primer Sealer or PVA Primer White × 1 | |
| Filler | Stucco Filler × 2 | Not used |
| Finish | Acryl Emulsion II × 2 | |
What the numbers mean
Coverage = 420 ÷ 40 = 10.5 and 420 ÷ 50 = 8.4 m² per litre. A 45-micron coat needs about 107 microns wet. Thinning up to 15% is allowed, more than most National exterior matts, so measure water rather than guessing.
How much to buy

| Boundary wall, 30 m long × 2.5 m, both faces | 150 m² | 29 to 35 L |
| Villa exterior | about 400 m² | 76 to 94 L |
