National Stoving Primer: Oven-Cured Primer for Appliances, Equipment and Vehicles

Appliance panel forming line in a factory

Short answer: National Stoving Primer is an alkyd-melamine formaldehyde industrial primer that cures in an oven, for metal equipment, domestic appliances and vehicle repaint, under National Stoving Enamel. Spray one 35-micron coat, allow 10 to 15 minutes flash-off, then stove at 120°C for 30 minutes or 150°C for 20 minutes. It covers about 15 m² per litre, thins 5 to 10% with National Stoving Thinner and has a 6-month shelf life.

What stoving means

Air-drying alkyds cure at room temperature over hours. Stoving products are cured by heat in an oven, so a production line can prime, stove, top-coat and stove again in a short cycle. National’s stoving system is two products: this primer and Stoving Enamel. It suits factories and workshops with an oven, not site work.

Step by step

  1. Degrease the parts with a solvent wash wiped dry, or detergent rinsed with fresh water, as National’s surface preparation guide sets out for steel.
  2. Remove rust and scale (blast to Sa 2.5 or clean to St 2), and make sure parts are dry and dust-free.
  3. Thin 5 to 10% with Stoving Thinner and spray one coat at 35 microns dry (about 65 wet), at 50 psi.
  4. Flash off for 10 to 15 minutes so solvent can escape before heating.
  5. Stove at 120°C for 30 minutes or 150°C for 20 minutes.
  6. Top-coat with Stoving Enamel at 30 microns and stove again.

What the numbers mean

Coverage = 540 ÷ 35 ≈ 15.4 m² per litre, in line with the sheet’s 15. Wet film = 35 ÷ 0.54 ≈ 65 microns, exactly the sheet’s recommendation. The full system (primer plus enamel) is about 65 microns dry.

100 m²about 6.7 Labout 5.9 L
500 m²about 33 Labout 29 L
Our own calculations from theoretical rates. Spraying small parts wastes a lot more; size orders to a 6-month shelf life.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping flash-off. The sheet gives 10 to 15 minutes before stoving.
  • Using G.P. Thinner. The sheet specifies National Stoving Thinner. See which National thinner to use.
  • Over-ordering. Shelf life is 6 months, much shorter than National’s 18-month air-dry alkyds.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a primer that can either air dry or stove?

National also makes a Red Oxide Air Drying / Stoving Primer (PDF) for production lines that need both options, topcoated with Gloss II for air drying or Stoving Enamel for stoving. Ask us if you need it.

Can I air dry Stoving Primer?

Its data sheet gives a stoving schedule only, so no. For air-dried work, use Red Oxide Primer with Gloss II.
