Terraco Handycoat Interior Stucco Putty: How to Use It Before Painting

Small dents, nail holes, hairline cracks and rough patches show through fresh paint, especially under a satin or semi-gloss finish. Terraco Handycoat Interior Stucco Putty is a ready-mixed filler made for exactly this job on interior walls and ceilings. This guide summarises Terraco’s UAE data sheet so you know how to use it and how much to buy.

Key facts at a glance

  • Ready-mixed, quick-drying white filler for interior use (product code 63295).
  • Acrylic copolymer binder with finely graded fillers.
  • Maximum 1 mm per coat; apply two or more thin coats if needed.
  • Coverage 0.2 to 0.4 kg/m², depending on the surface.
  • Packs: 1 kg cup, 5 kg pail and 18 litre pail.

What it is used for

Terraco describes it as a filler to repair and touch up interior surfaces, old or new, before painting. It bonds to cement-based surfaces, gypsum, gypsum boards, sprayplasters, wood and most common building surfaces, and it can be skimmed over other Handycoat or Sprayplaster grades for an extra-fine finish.

The data sheet lists it as easy to use, quick drying, vapour permeable and resistant to flaking, with negligible shrinkage.

Interior or exterior? This grade is for interiors. For cracks on outside walls, use Terraco Handycoat Exterior instead; see our Handycoat Exterior guide.

How to use it

  1. Prepare the surface. Brush away dust, dirt and loose matter, and remove ridges and form oil.
  2. Prime if needed. On dusting or flaking surfaces, Terraco recommends Terraco P Primer first.
  3. Apply thinly. Spread a thin, even layer with a filling knife or trowel, no more than 1 mm thick. It can be diluted with water if required.
  4. Build up in coats. For deeper areas, apply two or more coats, letting each dry before the next.
  5. Sand and paint. Lightly sand the final surface before painting, preferably within 24 hours of application, and remove the dust.
  6. Clean up. Clean tools with water.

How much do you need?

At Terraco’s stated 0.2 to 0.4 kg/m², a 5 kg pail covers roughly 12 to 25 m² per coat. For a full skim of a 40 m² room’s walls, that is about 8 to 16 kg per coat, or two to four 5 kg pails, depending on how rough the surface is. For spot repairs, a 1 kg cup is often enough.

Tips for a smooth result

  • Two thin coats sand better and crack less than one thick coat.
  • Shine a torch along the wall at a low angle to spot dips before you paint.
  • Spot-prime filled areas if your paint system calls for it, so they do not show as dull patches.
  • Fix the cause of any damp before filling; filler will not stop a leak.
