Terraco Handycoat Gypsum Joint Compound: Taping and Jointing Gypsum Boards

Metal stud partition being covered with gypsum board panels in a room under construction

Gypsum board partitions and ceilings are everywhere in UAE apartments and villa fit-outs, and the joints between boards are where a finish succeeds or fails. Badly taped joints show as ridges or cracks once the wall is painted. Terraco Handycoat Gypsum Joint Compound is a ready-to-use compound for taping joints and skim coating boards. This guide follows Terraco’s own UAE data sheet.

Key facts at a glance

  • Ready-to-use white compound for jointing and skim coating (product code 63290).
  • Vinyl copolymer binder with marble fillers; density 1.75.
  • Coverage: about 70 m² per 28 kg as a joint compound, or 25 to 35 m² per 28 kg as a skim coat.
  • Packs: 5 kg and 28 kg pails.

What it is used for

Terraco lists it for jointing or skim coating interior gypsum boards, cement boards, concrete walls and plastered block walls, for filling joints and hairline cracks, and for repairing interior surfaces before painting. The data sheet describes it as easy to sand, fast drying and vapour permeable, with negligible shrinkage.

For choosing the boards themselves, see our guide to gypsum board types in the UAE.

How to tape and joint gypsum boards

Terraco’s data sheet sets out a three-layer method, each layer wider than the last so the joint feathers out flat:

  1. Prepare. Brush away dust and debris. Remove ridges, form oil, loose paper and gypsum burrs from board edges, and drive in any protruding screw heads.
  2. Bed the tape. Apply compound into the vertical and horizontal gaps, then embed the jointing tape into it.
  3. First layer, 150 mm wide. Apply and level it out.
  4. Second layer, 200 mm wide. Once the first is dry, apply the second and let it dry.
  5. Third layer, 275 mm wide. Apply and make it even.
  6. Corners and screws. Fold the tape to a right angle for internal corners and use the same layering. Screw heads get the same number of applications.
  7. Sand. When the final layer is dry, sand lightly to remove imperfections and remove the dust before priming.

The data sheet calls the compound fast drying but does not give a fixed drying time, so let each layer dry fully before the next, especially in humid weather.

How much do you need?

  • Jointing only: about 70 m² of board per 28 kg pail. A 140 m² partition job needs roughly two 28 kg pails.
  • Full skim coat: 25 to 35 m² per 28 kg pail, depending on the surface. A 100 m² skim needs roughly three to four pails.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the tape, which leads to cracks along the joints.
  • Applying one thick layer instead of three widening ones, which leaves a visible bulge.
  • Recoating before the previous layer is dry.
  • Painting without removing sanding dust.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it as a skim coat on block walls?

Yes. Terraco lists concrete walls and plastered block walls as suitable, as well as gypsum and cement boards, for interior use.

What is the difference from Handycoat Interior Stucco Putty?

The joint compound is made for taping board joints and larger skim coats. The Interior Stucco Putty is a fine filler for repairs and touch-ups, applied up to 1 mm per coat.
